2023 Cider Apple Prices

Good cider from Irish apples needs around 40% to 45% of the juice to come from specific cider apple varieties which will give it the depth and flavour that eating and cooking apples just can’t match. These cider apple varieties aren’t as easy to come by as you might think. If you want to radically improve the quality of the cider you make, you can order or buy (we recommend ordering in advance) hand-picked cider apples from us to add to the apples you usually use. They’re among the best apples you’ll find anywhere. Grown and tended with the best care, freshly hand-picked, gently handled and ready to yield their delicious juice.

You can purchase hand-picked apples by the 300kg bin or the 20kg bag.

Hand-picked Cider Apples for Artisan and Home Cider-Makers

Cider makers can find it hard to source enough top quality cider apples to make their cider. Some of the best artisan or craft cider makers have to limit their output because they simply cannot source enough of the right type of apples and they refuse to compromise. Many home cider makers find that their cider lacks the depth and flavour they find in well made craft ciders because they can’t get their hands on the right cider varieties to make their cider sing. Here is where we can help. We can provide top quality, hand-picked cider apples at very reasonable prices and we can provide them by the 300 kg bin or by the 20kg box / bag.

You can choose to order apples in advance or take your chances that there will be some available at harvest time. Be careful, though. In 2019, one craft cider-maker bought all our apples. It would be wise to place an order in advance.

Prices in 2022 are €52 per 100kg in bags, collected from our orchard at Castlebellingham.

Buying by the bag, the price is €12 per 20kg bag. For a home cider maker, expecting to translate 20 kg of apples into around 14 litres of juice (70% yield), that would work out at 86 cent per litre of cider apple juice. You could add 36 litres of ordinary cooking or eating apple juice to make 50 litres (100 bottles) of top quality cider. Assuming you didn’t pay for the cookers and eaters, this would work out at 12 cent per bottle for top quality cider.

Why do I need specific cider apple varieties?

There are three types of apples: cooking apples, dessert (or eating) apples and cider apples.  You can eat cider apples but they don’t taste very good. Some varieties are very bitter and astringent, some are “dry” and chalky and some are just bland and boring to the taste. It’s the juice that makes cider apples special. Cider apples, even though most aren’t sweet to the taste, have more sugars in the juice than dessert apples or cookers, and more tannins too. The sugar levels will encourage fermentation when it encounters yeast and the tannins will add depth and interest to the flavour of the finished cider.

Whereas you can make cider with any apple juice, to make a good cider you need at least 35% to 40% cider apple varieties. Without this, you’ll find it very difficult to make a well balanced, easy drinking cider which leaves you wanting more.
